Wisconsin Patent of the Month – September 2024
MERIT CRO has advanced retinal diagnostics with its innovative workstation, designed to revolutionize the analysis of retinal images from optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans. This workstation is equipped to receive and display OCT retinal images, enabling clinicians to mark specific retinal layers directly on the image. By calculating a patient’s retinal reflectivity profile, it maps out potential retinal locations for the selected layer across the entire image. This data is then transmitted to a cloud server, which holds extensive OCT datasets of both healthy and diseased retinas.
What sets this invention apart is the integration of machine learning algorithms within the cloud server. These algorithms analyze the patient’s reflectivity profile in relation to existing data, identifying any retinal lesions, disease markers, or stage progression associated with conditions like age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and other retinal diseases. The workstation then generates a report, providing clinicians with a detailed, computer-generated trace of retinal layers, lesion locations, and disease stage, creating a comprehensive diagnostic tool.
This innovation brings precision and efficiency to retinal disease diagnosis, allowing for early detection and targeted treatment. By streamlining retinal imaging analysis and leveraging machine learning for complex interpretations, MERIT CRO’s workstation supports clinicians with reliable, data-driven insights. As a networked solution, this tool marks a new era in ophthalmology, bridging the gap between traditional retinal imaging and cutting-edge AI, to improve patient care and outcomes in retinal health.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
