Wyoming Patent of the Month – September 2021

Stormwater pollution ranges from small cigarette butts to large plastics or chemicals. There are numerous pollution capturing devices but rarely do these perform as effectively as needed. As this trash builds and escapes pollution collecting devices, it forms massive trash islands in the ocean or builds up in the sewer system. Frog Creek Partners, LLC has developed a pollution capture device capable of filtering pollutants from stormwater within a catch basin. They designed this device to protect natural waterways and promote conservation efforts.

Their system uses a removable catch basin filter (CBF) insert. This CBF insert is fitted into a stormwater catch basin where the stormwater exits the gutter and enters the stormwater sewer system. This filter reroutes all of the stormwater through a container-like filtration system, with holes small enough to capture pollution as small as cigarette butts and sediments but allowing water to pass through at a regular flow rate. The CFB insert has a hinged cover at the top of the insert to allow the captured pollutants to be evacuated through the use of a vehicle or being tipped by a mechanical arm. A hinged trap door is at the bottom of the insert to allow captured pollutants to be evacuated through the bottom of the device into the container. The system captures pollutants before they enter the mainline storm drain system and cleans out the water ways early on.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
