Louisiana Patent of the Month – February 2021
Current marine vessel systems monitor hundreds of subsystems for parameters, like temperature, pressure, fluid leaks and so on. Sensors track these parameters and if a sensor detects an issue, it signals the vessel operator by an audible or visual notification at the user interface. However there are numerous sensors involved in each of the hundreds of subsystems. The UI is unable to practically display all sensors and so the operator may not be informed of an issue until it has reached a critical error point. Marine Technologies, LLC has designed an improved system to allow operators to take a more proactive approach to vessel maintenance.
Their conditional online-based risk advisory system (CORBAS) monitors and sends notifications to the vessel operator. The notifications could include abnormalities of any vessel subsystem or suggest optimizations to reduce costs and ensure operation time is maximized. Through use of a machine learning system, the CORBAS can learn from the vessel operator allowing it to increase knowledge over time and limit false positive alarms. These notifications provide easier interaction between the vessel operator and the subsystems, as the notifications can specify details rather than using a flashing light or audible noise to indicate a problem without details..

What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
