Ohio Patent of the Month – October 2021

Interior design – including both the model or layout and the decor – is a surprisingly challenging task. Some people have a knack for picking out what decor and materials will make a room pop while others can’t decide if their additions have made it too crowded or too sparse, if the colors match or clash and so on. This has been made even more challenging by the growing variety of designs, materials, styles, and features. Dream Book, LLC are experts in home design, architecture, home building and more. They developed a tool to help those of us who are lacking in the decor skills to easily build the living space of our dreams.

Their software allows the homeowner to select building materials and decor items while relying on other user’s experiences through a form of crowdsourcing. The homeowner can use an iterative process and customization options that are based on the user’s own taste and budget. The software works well on a tablet, where the homeowner can view images and flick through options easily. It recommends materials and decor for a particular room based on their style preferences and uses a Machine Learning algorithm to grow with the user’s taste. These recommendations include details such as fixtures, fittings, trims, and paints. Images are presented from herds of images, using the preferences of the user to narrow it down. By having the homeowner select their own preferences and search through multiple options, with crowdsourced feedback, they can create a design that fits their own unique style while feeling more comfortable in their decisions. This also helps to convey the vibe they want to bring to life to the contractors or anyone else working on the house with them.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses?
