New York Patent of the Month – November 2023

TeleLingo LLC is targeting the distracted driving epidemic to bring safety back to our roads. The company is employing telematic technology to ensure safer voice conversations between drivers and remote parties. Founded by Dr. Maggie Stys and Dr. Ing. Roberto Sicconi, TeleLingo is propelled by their shared vision, drawing from their experiences at IBM Watson Research.

Distracted driving poses a grave risk on roads, amplified by the incessant need for constant connectivity. Whether the average person is calling their spouse to say they are on their way home, or a truck driver is calling to communicate an update on their payload – communication remains essential. To address this, TeleLingo has introduced a comprehensive system that integrates in-vehicle and remote subsystems, communicating wirelessly and sharing vital information. The system is equipped with a multitude of sensors generating critical monitoring data, encompassing factors like location, time, acceleration, speed, and even the physical condition of the driver.

Marketed as Dreyev, the solution uses computer vision and AI to assess the driver’s head pose, spatial awareness, eye position and more. These details can detect pilot drowsiness, fatigue and in-car passenger or on-road distractions and then provide audio and voice alerts to bring the driver’s focus back to the road – or convince them to pull over. The system also supports real-time communication, removing the need for driver’s to physically pick up their phone and call their fleet managers.

This technology emerges at a crucial time, especially as U.S. car accidents have seen a significant increase. TeleLingo’s approach harnesses machine learning, AI, and real-time monitoring to enhance driver attention, thereby curbing accidents caused by distraction and drowsiness.

As TeleLingo’s journey unfolds, the promise of pioneering a game-changing safety standard on the roads is on the horizon. With a strong foundation in disruptive technology and a passionate commitment to enhancing driver safety, TeleLingo is poised to make significant strides in reshaping the future of road safety.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?

The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
