Michigan Patent of the Month – July 2024
Rydberg Technologies Inc. is at the forefront of innovation with their atom-based closed-loop control system, a breakthrough in quantum sensor technology. This system leverages the unique properties of Rydberg atoms, which are atoms in highly excited states with significant electric dipole moments, to enhance the detection and measurement of electromagnetic (EM) radiation.
The core of this system consists of a compartment filled with excited Rydberg atoms exposed to external EM radiation. A device within the system applies an input signal to these atoms, while a detector monitors their response. The controller then adjusts the input signal based on this detected response, enabling semi-autonomous or autonomous fine-tuning of the signal.
This dynamic adjustment capability allows the system to respond in real-time to variations in EM radiation, optimizing the accuracy and precision of measurements. The system can alter the frequency, amplitude, phase, polarization, and other characteristics of the input signal to maintain optimal performance. It can also manage differential feedback, ensuring consistent operation even in changing environments.
One of the significant advantages of this technology is its ability to integrate multiple fields and signals, enhancing its versatility. For instance, it can handle multi-dimensional Doppler matching of laser beams to reduce Doppler shifts, which is crucial for accurate spectroscopy.
Rydberg Technologies’ invention has wide-ranging applications, from improving communication systems and radar technology to advancing scientific research in quantum mechanics. Its ability to autonomously adjust to EM radiation makes it a powerful tool for various industries requiring precise EM field measurements and control.
This atom-based control system represents a significant leap forward in sensor technology, offering unprecedented levels of sensitivity and accuracy. It stands as a testament to the potential of quantum technologies in solving complex real-world problems, paving the way for more advanced and reliable measurement and communication systems.
Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
