New Mexico Patent of the Month – October 2024

Contrast, Inc. has transformed the landscape of high dynamic range (HDR) imaging with its innovative dual-sensor technology. By leveraging an optical splitting system and co-planar image sensors, this invention captures the full spectrum of light levels in real-time, producing unparalleled HDR images and videos. This compact yet powerful system is specifically designed for integration into mobile devices, making professional-grade HDR imaging accessible to everyday users.

At the core of the technology is a beamsplitter that channels incoming light into two separate paths, directing 96% of light to one sensor and 4% to another. These sensors, arranged on the same substrate, simultaneously capture identical images at varying light intensities. This setup ensures perfect alignment and eliminates the need for sequential exposure adjustments, a limitation in traditional HDR systems that often leads to motion artifacts in dynamic scenes.

The result is stunning image clarity and depth, even in challenging lighting conditions. Details in shadows and highlights are preserved seamlessly, mimicking the human eye’s ability to perceive vast contrast ratios. Unlike conventional HDR systems that require multiple shots, Contrast’s solution processes images in near real-time, making it ideal for capturing motion-rich environments like sports, wildlife, or urban settings.

What sets this technology apart is its efficiency and adaptability. The compact design integrates easily into smartphones, tablets, and wearable cameras, all without compromising battery life or increasing device bulk. Additionally, its monolithic sensor arrangement enhances durability, ensuring consistent performance even in rugged conditions.

With this breakthrough, Contrast, Inc. is redefining mobile photography, offering consumers the power to capture every nuance of their world. Whether you’re a professional photographer or an enthusiast, this invention promises to elevate visual storytelling to new heights, one breathtaking image at a time.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?

The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
