Rhode Island Patent of the Month – October 2024

Composite Energy Technologies has redefined the capabilities of unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) with their groundbreaking monocoque underbody design. Crafted from a single piece of fiber-reinforced sheet, this innovative structural shell blends lightweight durability with exceptional versatility. Unlike traditional UUVs, this advanced underbody is free-flooding, making it ideal for deep-sea missions where strength and adaptability are critical.

At the core of the design lies an acoustically transparent window, seamlessly integrated into the body. This feature enables acoustic signals to pass through without compromising the UUV’s structural integrity. By incorporating transverse structural members, the interior cavity is divided into payload-specific compartments, capable of supporting diverse equipment like sensors, batteries, motors, and pressure vessels. The addition of longitudinal supports and attachment rails further ensures secure payload integration, opening possibilities for complex mission configurations.

This revolutionary monocoque design also enhances hydrodynamic performance, with a customizable cover that provides easy access to internal components while reducing overall weight. Constructed of materials optimized for strength-to-weight ratio, the UUV achieves unparalleled efficiency, extending operational range and payload capacity. The seamless integration of polymer-reinforced carbon fiber amplifies its resilience against extreme underwater pressures, allowing it to perform in environments that previously posed insurmountable challenges.

Composite Energy Technologies’ innovation is not merely a feat of engineering—it’s a leap forward for industries reliant on underwater exploration, inspection, and monitoring. By addressing the limitations of conventional designs, their UUV sets a new standard for adaptability, durability, and mission capability in the subsea domain. This invention empowers sectors ranging from energy and defense to scientific research, unlocking the potential of the deep with precision and reliability.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?

The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
