Colorado inventionINDEX July 2026: 1.63% (A grade)

The inventionINDEX measures innovation output by comparing GDP growth with patent production growth.

Anything over C grade is positive sentiment; anything under C is negative outlook/sentiment. Using that sentiment, it is possible to observe trends over time, and also compare states/countries. In doing so, we can predict which states have the best chance to recover economically from the pandemic (or any other economic incident that may occur).

Month inventionINDEX SCORE
July 2026 1.63%
June 2026 1.74%
May 2026 1.78%
April 2026 1.43%
March 2026 1.98%

October 2025 1.65%
September 2025 1.82%
August 2025 1.68%
July 2025 2.23%

The latest Colorado inventionINDEX score for July 2026 registered at 1.63 percent, earning an A rating. This performance reflects a steady state when compared to the 60-month historical trajectory, sitting just below the multi-year mean of approximately 1.71 percent. Across the evaluated five-year timeframe, scores have fluctuated between a low of 1.21 percent in December 2021 and a peak of 2.44 percent in October 2023. While July 2026 represents a slight pull-back from spring highs such as March 2026 at 1.98 percent, it maintains a strong trajectory comfortably within the upper tiers of historical ratings, outperforming low periods like January 2026 at 1.24 percent.

Examining the broader pattern over the past five years reveals a remarkably resilient innovation ecosystem in Colorado, dominated by solid grades. Out of the 61 recorded months, the index achieved top-tier A+ ratings in 33 instances and solid A ratings in 9 instances, indicating that high-level inventive activity is the norm rather than the exception. Seasonal or cyclical dips into the B range, such as April 2026 at 1.43 percent or November 2024 at 1.29 percent, have historically been met with swift rebounds into higher performance bands. This structural durability highlights an underlying framework capable of generating continuous proprietary technology and entrepreneurial momentum.

Higher inventionINDEX scores and superior ratings like A or A+ deliver substantial positive economic outcomes for the state. A strong score signals a thriving research environment, vibrant patent filings, and high intellectual property velocity, which directly attracts institutional venture capital and private equity investment. High innovation ratings bolster workforce growth by drawing top technical talent and encouraging research institutions to expand their commercialization programs. Ultimately, sustained high scores reinforce Colorado’s position as a premier regional hub for advanced technology, biotechnology, and clean energy enterprises.

Conversely, lower scores and diminished ratings carry significant negative implications for long-term regional development. When the index drops toward lower thresholds such as B or B- grades, it often reflects reduced commercial research activity, delayed patenting schedules, or macroeconomic tightening that constrains early-stage funding. A prolonged downward trend risks signaling stagnation to prospective corporate partners, potentially prompting investors to redirect capital toward more dynamic geographic markets. Maintaining vigilant support for startup infrastructure and institutional research remains critical to prevent structural declines in the index score over time.

Discussion:

In July, the Colorado inventionINDEX scored a positive sentiment which was higher than the previous year’s average but underperformed the upward trend for the year. This is similar to the prior 12 months, which experienced an upward trend.

As the economy continues to stabilize in the post-pandemic era, it remains uncertain whether any backlog of applications still exists or if the department has returned to normal processing timelines. The inventionINDEX could also be affected by lingering consequences from the pandemic, such as company closures, reduced workforces, and limited R&D capabilities, which may still be impacting current operations.
