Missouri inventionINDEX July 2026: 1.09% (B- grade)

The inventionINDEX measures innovation output by comparing GDP growth with patent production growth.

Anything over C grade is positive sentiment; anything under C is negative outlook/sentiment. Using that sentiment, it is possible to observe trends over time, and also compare states/countries. In doing so, we can predict which states have the best chance to recover economically from the pandemic (or any other economic incident that may occur).

Historical Missouri inventionINDEX Scores

The Missouri inventionINDEX score for the past 12 months is shown in the table below.

Month inventionINDEX SCORE
July 2026 1.09%
June 2026 1.18%
May 2026 1.36%
April 2026 1.22%
March 2026 1.28%
February 2026 1.07%
January 2026 1.03%
December 2025 1.08%
November 2025 1.11%
October 2025 1.10%
September 2025 1.19%
August 2025 1.19%
July 2025 1.30%

The Missouri inventionINDEX for July 2026 stands at 1.09%, corresponding to a B- rating. This figure reflects a noticeable pullback from the strong performance recorded earlier in the year, particularly the multi-year peak of 1.36% (A+) achieved in May 2026 and the subsequent 1.18% (A-) in June 2026. Across the overall historical timeline spanning the past 60 months, where index scores average approximately 1.15%, the latest figure places current innovation metrics slightly below the long-term benchmark. While a B- rating demonstrates underlying stability in inventive activity, the recent trajectory highlights a cooling phase following an exceptional spring expansion.

Comparing July 2026 with prior summer periods provides additional context regarding performance cycles. Historical July readings have ranged from a low of 0.99% (C-) in July 2021 to strong highs of 1.27% (A+) in July 2024 and 1.30% (A+) in July 2025. The current score of 1.09% closely tracks July 2022 (1.10%, B) and improves upon July 2023 (1.03%, C+). However, falling short of the peak momentum demonstrated in 2024 and 2025 indicates that local inventive output is experiencing a temporary stabilization period rather than maintaining an aggressive upward growth curve.

Securing higher index scores and top-tier ratings, such as the A and A+ grades achieved in recent high-performing months, yields substantial advantages for the regional economy. Elevated scores reflect vibrant intellectual property creation, accelerated technology commercialization, and dynamic startup activity. High ratings enhance investor confidence, attracting early-stage venture capital and corporate research funding into the region. In addition, superior innovation marks strengthen regional competitiveness, stimulate high-wage employment opportunities, and establish a resilient foundation for sustainable commercial enterprise development.

Conversely, experiencing lower scores or drops into lower rating tiers, such as the C-range values seen in January 2026 (1.03%, C) or December 2022 (0.99%, C-), brings significant economic headwinds. Reduced index scores signal slowing patent application momentum, diminished capital deployment, and increased risk aversion among entrepreneurs and financial stakeholders. Persistent lower ratings risk stalling technology transfer pipelines, delaying commercial market entry, and encouraging talent or capital migration to competing innovation centers. Monitoring these dips allows stakeholders to proactively address underlying bottlenecks and rebuild upward momentum.

Discussion:

In July, the Missouri inventionINDEX scored a positive sentiment which was lower than the previous year’s average and underperformed the upward trend for the year. This is similar to the prior 12 months, which experienced an upward trend.

As the economy continues to stabilize in the post-pandemic era, it remains uncertain whether any backlog of applications still exists or if the department has returned to normal processing timelines. The inventionINDEX could also be affected by lingering consequences from the pandemic, such as company closures, reduced workforces, and limited R&D capabilities, which may still be impacting current operations.
