New Mexico Patent of the Month – January 2024
X-Bow Systems Inc., a trailblazer in propulsion technology, has been granted a patent for a modulating internal ballistics system set to redefine the dynamics of rocket propulsion systems. Their latest creation introduces a cutting-edge propulsion system that not only propels rockets with precision but also empowers users with real-time control over the ballistics profile during flight.
3D printed rocket motors typically use a pressurized oxidizer and a solid fuel to propel themselves. X-Bow Systems has designed a method of producing a fuel grain for both solid and hybrid rocket motors. The unique design of the fuel grain chamber allows for precise control over the flux of the oxidizer and therefore the rate of propulsion.
This new manufacturing process has less waste, less labor, and requires less energy all while producing a more functional system. Their approach uses additive manufacturing to generate a fuel grain chamber equipped with sensors to support the continuous monitoring and modification of the oxidizer flux, granting the operator with control over the rocket’s ballistics profile.
The company has built a reputation as experts in additive manufacturing of solid rocket motors. Through their years of experience making, building, and flying rockets, the company has now also entered into a project with the Department of Defense, working to enhance solid rocket motor production capacity. Between their growing patent profile and their growing project and partner list, X-Bow Systems is a key player in this industry’s innovation.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
