Pennsylvania Patent of the Month – February 2026

A new pharmaceutical breakthrough is set to transform the way we treat eye infections and maintain ocular health. iVIEW Therapeutics Inc. has secured U.S. Patent No. 12514873, titled ‘Stable pharmaceutical articles containing dilute povidone iodine formulations’. This innovation addresses a long-standing challenge in the delivery of antimicrobial treatments.

The Challenge of Stability

Povidone-iodine (PVP-I) is a powerful disinfectant used worldwide to kill viruses and bacteria. While high concentrations are effective for skin, the eyes require much more dilute solutions to avoid irritation. However, these dilute formulations are notoriously unstable. They often lose their potency quickly when stored in standard plastic bottles. This limitation has historically made it difficult to provide safe and long-lasting eye drops.

The Breakthrough Container

The newly patented invention provides a simple yet effective solution. Researchers discovered that using containers made from specific materials, such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) or polypropylene (PP), significantly enhances stability. These materials protect the iodine from degrading without requiring additional chemical stabilizers. The result is a more durable pharmaceutical product that maintains its strength throughout its shelf life.

Real-World Medical Impact

This development has major implications for patients suffering from ocular infections. Stable low-concentration PVP-I allows the medical community to offer treatments that are both potent and gentle. This technology paves the way for advanced eye drops and nasal sprays that are easier to distribute. It represents a significant step forward in making high-quality antimicrobial care more accessible and reliable for the general public.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?

The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
