Some conditions, like pulmonary hypertension, are treated with supplemental oxygen therapy which can be delivered to the patient either continuously or occasionally during exercise or sleep. The caveat for this type of treatment is that the patient needs to track their blood oxygen saturation levels. OxiWear, Inc. has designed a new piece of tech – a wearable earpiece capable of monitoring oxygen.
The device uses an LED and a photodetector. The LED directs light towards the photodetector. The light passes through the ear before reaching the photodetector which then registers how much light makes it through the ear. This signal is then stored in the device memory and used to calculate an oxygen saturation level. This calculated oxygen saturation level is then compared to a predetermined threshold level and generates an alert if the calculated level is lower than the threshold. The alert can give the user a chance to increase oxygen intake right away.
