Bone fillers are used during bone repair to stimulate new bone growth and rapidly fill voids in the bone. These fillers are usually made from bone particles or fibers mixed along with other materials and packed into the bone void. Vivex Biologics Group, Inc. is focused on developing these types of regenerative medicine solutions to help improve healing time and ability. Part of this research includes improving the efficacy of bone fillers.

They have developed a method for producing infused demineralized bone fibers. These demineralized bone fibers expose the natural bone morphogenic proteins (BMPs) which improve bone formation. Their process requires shaving a whole bone into fibers, washing the fibers, demineralizing them and infusing them with a supernatant biologic material. The supernatant mixture forms a strong hydrophilic characteristic to protect the broken down bone components/ When infusing the bones, the demineralized fibers are subjected to a negative pressure to draw the supernatant into the bone fibers. This helps the bone filler better fill the void and without the need of any additional carriers.

Are you developing new technology for an existing application? Did you know your development work could be eligible for the R&D Tax Credit and you can receive up to 14% back on your expenses? Even if your development isn’t successful your work may still qualify for R&D credits (i.e. you don’t need to have a patent to qualify). To find out more, please contact a Swanson Reed R&D Specialist today or check out our free online eligibility test.
