Maryland Patent of the Month – May 2022

Plasminogen proteins are naturally occurring, synthesized by the liver and set to circulate in the blood. Once activated, plasminogen is transformed into plasmin – an enzyme that causes the breakdown of proteins and the breakdown of blood clots. Plasminogen deficiencies can cause inflamed growths on mucous membranes including the inside of the mouth or the inner eyelids. Unfortunately, there is no efficient and non-invasive way to treat those who suffer from this deficiency.

ProMetic Biotherapeutics, Inc. has developed a plasminogen replacement therapy to treat this deficiency. This clinical stage biopharmaceutical company is set on developing novel small molecule therapeutics for inflammatory, fibrotic, and metabolic diseases. This plasminogen therapy was developed in line with the company’s drug discovery platform and data-driven approach.

Their therapy involves the administration of Glu-plasminogen to the patient. Depending on the severity of the deficiency, the dose will be set to increase the plasminogen levels by 1-10%. Their testing shows promising results in a range of deficiency types including Type-I, Type-II and acquired plasminogen deficiencies.
