Maryland Patent of the Month – November 2022
Wastewater systems are designed to handle a robust range of wastes. Unfortunately, if these systems are inefficient, excess nutrients can be released into waterways and the ground. Nutrient pollution is a large contributor to environmental stress, impacting soil quality and water health.
SOSystems, Inc. has designed a wastewater treatment system that lowers the biological oxygen demand (BOD), total nitrogen, and other excrements like suspended solids. By reducing the presence of these constituents, the environment is better protected and contamination is reduced.
The company started down this path after George Frigon, the founder and a veteran wastewater engineer, saw how ineffective treatment was impacting the natural resources. It was then that he committed to finding a wastewater solution that could prevent this nutrient overloading.
Their solution uses a Density Separation Tank which separates the influent into separate densities. These density subgroups move into different tanks for individual treatment. This movement is controlled by pumps. As the density is lowered, it moves from the first tank to the next. Their patented solution, LooLoop® also incorporates a suite of biological processes which interact to maximize pollutant reduction. These processes include strategic evaporation, reducing agents, and coagulants. After moving through this process, the quality of the wastewater effluent is significantly improved compared to that from a traditional system.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
