Arkansas Patent of the Month – September 2023

Whether cutting hair or slicing carrots – a sharp blade makes the job easier. Unfortunately, sharpening your tools isn’t always straightforward as different blades will have different edge angles or bevels. Smith’s Consumer Products, Inc. has recently been granted a patent for their solution to this problem. Their Adjustable Sharpener is set to redefine the way we maintain our blades and cutting tools, making sharpening easier, more precise, and portable than ever before.

Traditional sharpeners have often been bulky and cumbersome, but Smith’s has listened to the needs of users and developed a pocket-sized solution. No more countertop or benchtop space is needed. Now you can have a high-quality sharpener that fits right in your pocket.

One of the standout features of the Adjustable Sharpener is its unique design. Unlike conventional sharpeners with independent arms, Smith’s Consumer Products has engineered a solution where the arms are connected and pivoted from the ends. This innovation simplifies the adjustment mechanism, ensuring that the arms always operate in sync. No more worrying about timing or complex adjustments. This smart design enhances sharpening angle accuracy, giving you the perfect edge every time.

The Adjustable Sharpener is designed with two sharpening slots, each with its own set of abrasive elements. These slots create a V-shaped sharpening angle, making it suitable for a wide range of blades and tools. Whether you’re sharpening a knife, scissors, or any cutting implement, this sharpener can handle it all.

The adjuster is ergonomically designed for ease of use, allowing you to manually adjust and control the sharpening angle. This level of precision ensures that you get the sharpness you desire, tailored to your specific needs.

The adjustment assembly, with its rack and rotatable gear, seamlessly translates linear movement into rotational movement for the arms. This means that with a simple slide of the adjuster, you can increase or decrease the sharpening angle between the abrasive elements, achieving the perfect edge with minimal effort.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?

The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
