Indiana Patent of the Month – March 2025
Engineered Medical Systems, Inc. has unveiled a major upgrade to a core tool in emergency medicine: the bag valve mask. Their newly patented resuscitation system promises to deliver more effective ventilation with improved patient safety—an innovation that could save lives when seconds count.
Smarter Flow, Safer Breaths
Traditional bag valve masks often waste oxygen by introducing it too early in the flow path. Engineered Medical Systems’ invention rethinks that approach. By placing a second oxygen inlet after the check valve—closer to the patient—it ensures a more concentrated and efficient delivery of oxygen during resuscitation.
The system includes multiple safety features, such as two pressure release valves. One is positioned downstream to prevent over-pressurizing the patient’s airway, while the other, upstream, protects the bag and device. A PEEP valve with an integrated biological filter adds another layer of protection, keeping exhaled particles from re-entering the air.
Designed for Critical Moments
Every detail of this system is geared toward emergency use: a reliable check valve that prevents reverse airflow, a pressure gauge for real-time monitoring, and optional sterile packaging with all components ready to deploy.
The result is a safer, smarter resuscitation tool that helps medical teams deliver life-saving care more effectively.
As manual ventilation remains essential in hospitals, ambulances, and disaster zones, this innovation could quickly become a new standard in emergency respiratory support.

What is the R&D Tax Credit?
The Research & Experimentation Tax Credit (or R&D Tax Credit), is a general business tax credit under Internal Revenue Code section 41 for companies that incur research and development (R&D) costs in the United States. The credits are a tax incentive for performing qualified research in the United States, resulting in a credit to a tax return. For the first three years of R&D claims, 6% of the total qualified research expenses (QRE) form the gross credit. In the 4th year of claims and beyond, a base amount is calculated, and an adjusted expense line is multiplied times 14%. Click here to learn more.
