Alabama inventionINDEX September 2026: 1.82% (A+ grade)
The inventionINDEX measures innovation output by comparing GDP growth with patent production growth.
Anything over C grade is positive sentiment; anything under C is negative outlook/sentiment. Using that sentiment, it is possible to observe trends over time, and also compare states/countries. In doing so, we can predict which states have the best chance to recover economically from the pandemic (or any other economic incident that may occur).

| Month | inventionINDEX SCORE |
|---|---|
| September 2026 | 1.82% |
| August 2026 | 1.40% |
| July 2026 | 1.03% |
| June 2026 | 1.65% |
| May 2026 | 1.53% |
| April 2026 | 1.16% |

| December 2025 | 1.78% |
| November 2025 | 0.86% |
| October 2025 | 1.16% |
| September 2025 | 1.53% |
The Alabama inventionINDEX reached 1.82% in September 2026, earning an A+ rating and demonstrating a sharp upward trajectory compared to previous months. This latest metric reflects a noticeable rebound from July 2026, when the score temporarily dipped to 1.03% with a C rating, as well as a solid advance over August 2026 at 1.40% with an A- rating. When measured against the 60-month historical average of approximately 1.35%, the current score stands well above baseline levels. It represents one of the strongest performances recorded in recent years, approaching the 60-month peak of 2.15% set in January 2024.
A long-term examination of the dataset highlights periodic cyclicality in the region’s innovation output alongside general resilience. Over the past five years, the index experienced notable lows of 0.86% in July 2023, November 2024, and November 2025, each receiving a D+ rating. However, these pullbacks were consistently followed by rapid recoveries into A-grade territory, such as the rise to 1.78% in December 2025 and 1.65% in June 2026. The recurring emergence of top-tier A+ marks across multiple quarters indicates that underlying invention activity remains structurally robust despite seasonal or short-term contractions.
Achieving a high inventionINDEX score carries substantial positive economic outcomes for Alabama. Higher grades signal a vibrant ecosystem characterized by robust intellectual property development, active university-industry partnerships, and elevated entrepreneurial engagement. Top scores foster investor confidence, encouraging venture capital inflows and federal research grants into local technology sectors. Furthermore, strong ratings bolster institutional reputations, attracting specialized talent, driving high-value job creation, and establishing the state as a competitive regional leader in research and commercialization.
Conversely, sustained lower scores present critical challenges for the local economy and research infrastructure. A depressed inventionINDEX rating reflects sluggish patent activity, reduced commercial innovation, and potential bottlenecks in research pipeline conversion. Prolonged exposure to lower grades can deter private investments, limit university commercialization funding, and lead to talent migration toward more dynamic technology hubs. Ultimately, an extended slump risks eroding regional competitiveness and diminishing broader economic growth across emerging technological sectors.
Discussion:
In September, the Alabama inventionINDEX scored a positive sentiment which was higher than the previous year’s average and outperformed the upward trend for the year. This is similar to the prior 12 months, which experienced a slight upward trend.
As the economy continues to stabilize in the post-pandemic era, it remains uncertain whether any backlog of applications still exists or if the department has returned to normal processing timelines. The inventionINDEX could also be affected by lingering consequences from the pandemic, such as company closures, reduced workforces, and limited R&D capabilities, which may still be impacting current operations.
